A Poem

Life of Autism

written by Calvin Nye (our featured Artist of the Month)

It was hard at first.
But I'll give it to you straight.

I have autism.
This is what I have to say.

People see me differently.
The quiet, the abnormal, the curved,
The weirdo, the freak-through their eyes.
But, I don't follow those people's rules of conduct.
Some people are not born this way.
I'm the lucky one.
I don't care what they think about me.
I don't need to change.
They need to accept me.
Me, as a human being.
Not me as the autistic kid.

Sometimes I want to change,
But I would not be myself.
Besides, I can't change,
No faith or cure can change me.

I see the world differently.
You would be amazed if you had my eyes.

Actors for Autism Open Mic Night

Image Actors for Autism is pleased to announce that we are starting an Open Mic Night which will be held every Thursday evening at 8pm starting March 2nd.

Open Mic Night is an opportunity for people to work on their performance skills in front of a live audience. It is an invitation to all actors, singers, musicians, song writers, poets, etc. to showcase their talents.

The goal of Open Mic Night is to create a community of performing artists that come together to enjoy each other on a regular basis. We encourage you to stay, make new friends, learn, and get inspired.

Sing a song, read your poem, practice your stand up, or do a scene! Performances will be video taped and archived for webcasting. DVDs will be available for a small donation.

Presented by: Actors for Autism, Los Angeles
Where: The Travolta Family Theater, 18344 Oxnard St. Tarzana, CA
When: Thursday evenings, 8-10 pm beginning March 2nd
